Quality control starts before translation begins. The source text itself determines the ceiling for MTPE quality—a clean, well-structured source with consistent terminology and clear sentence structure will produce significantly better MT output than a source with ambiguities, inconsistent terminology, or complex nested clauses.

Segment complexity assessment. Each segment is evaluated for linguistic complexity, technical density, and contextual dependency. High-complexity segments (legal disclaimers, technical specifications, marketing copy with wordplay) are flagged for more careful post-editing and potentially routed to specialist editors rather than generalists.

The editor fixes critical errors—mistranslations that change meaning, grammatical errors that make sentences unintelligible, and terminology errors that could cause legal or safety issues. Style, fluency refinements, and minor phrasing improvements are generally left as-is. Light PE is appropriate for internal documentation, user-generated content, and content with short relevance windows.

Full post-editing addresses everything light PE covers, plus fluency, style, tone, register, and formatting. The result should read as if it were originally written in the target language by a competent professional.
