Luxembourgish Language

Luxembourgish Language Overview

Luxembourgish is a West Germanic language belonging to the Indo-European language family and is a variant of Moselle Franconian within the Franconian group. It originated as the language of immigrants from the Rhineland and Salian Franks in the fourth century and is one of the three main languages of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, as well as an official language. Luxembourgish is written using the Latin alphabet.

Luxembourgish is primarily spoken in Luxembourg and also in neighboring regions close to Luxembourg, such as the Arlon area in Luxembourg Province, Belgium, Lorraine in France, and Trier in Germany.

Although Luxembourgish belongs to the Central West Franconian group of High German, it has adopted over 5,000 French words. As a mother tongue, Luxembourgish is considered the "language of the heart" by Luxembourgers and is typically used in daily conversation rather than in written form. Moreover, the use of Luxembourgish is quite common in many administrative institutions and commercial places within the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
