Māori Language
Māori Language Overview
Māori is the language of the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand, also known as "te reo", meaning "the language". It is primarily spoken in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, and is one of the official languages of New Zealand and the Cook Islands, alongside English and sign language.
In 1840, the Latin alphabet was introduced for writing the Māori language, becoming the written form of the indigenous language. Māori has only 15 letters, including 5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and 10 consonants (H, K, M, N, Ng, P, R, T, W, Wh), making it relatively simple.
There are also regional dialects of Māori, with Tainui and Waikato dialects being quite common. In everyday communication, Māori is often used alongside English, creating a unique cultural and social style.
However, Māori is classified as an endangered language by UNESCO. Despite efforts to promote and preserve the Māori language and cultural heritage, it faces increasing cultural pressures and the risk of language loss over time. Therefore, the protection and transmission of the Māori language are particularly important.
